Piano Lessons Across Hampshire

Hampshire stretches from the Berkshire border in the north to the Solent coastline in the south, taking in coastal towns, the New Forest, and large urban centres including Southampton and Portsmouth. Piano demand spans the full range — from young children starting their first lessons through to adult learners returning after many years away from the instrument, and serious students preparing for music college auditions.

Lessons typically take place at the tutor’s home or studio, the student’s home, or a local music school, with online lessons available for theory, repertoire work, and intermediate-to-advanced students who need less hands-on technical correction.

What to Expect from Piano Lessons

Most piano tutors in Hampshire offer 30-minute lessons as standard, with longer 45- or 60-minute lessons for more advanced students or those preparing for graded exams.

Pricing varies by tutor and location, but typical rates in Hampshire range from £25–38 per half-hour for beginner-to-intermediate lessons, with specialist or advanced tuition charged at higher rates.

Levels Covered

Hampshire’s mix of school-age students, forces families, and adult learners means most local piano tutors are used to teaching across the full range of levels:

  • Beginners — hand position, simple melodies, music reading in both clefs
  • Intermediate — scales, arpeggios, more complex repertoire, graded exam preparation (Grades 1–5)
  • Advanced — major classical repertoire, advanced theory, sight-reading, conservatoire audition prep, higher grades (6–8) and diplomas

Styles and Genres

Hampshire’s local piano tutors cover a wide stylistic range, reflecting the diversity of the county’s musical tastes — from classical training in Winchester and Southampton through to contemporary teaching across the more urban areas. Common styles taught include:

  • Classical (Baroque through to contemporary classical)
  • Jazz and blues
  • Pop, rock, and contemporary
  • Film and theatre music
  • Graded exam preparation

If you have a specific style or focus in mind — exam preparation, jazz improvisation, learning to play favourite songs by ear, accompanying singers — let us know in your enquiry and we’ll match you with a tutor who specialises in that area.

Acoustic Piano or Digital Piano?

Whether to start on an acoustic or digital piano comes up regularly with Hampshire students — particularly those in service housing, terraced properties, or smaller flats where noise and space are practical concerns. A good-quality digital piano with fully weighted keys works well for daily practice and can be used with headphones at any time. Acoustic uprights give a more authentic feel but are more expensive, larger, and need tuning regularly. From around Grade 4 upwards, regular access to an acoustic piano becomes more important. Your tutor can give specific recommendations based on your goals and circumstances.

Graded Exam Preparation

Hampshire has examination centres for ABRSM, Trinity, and LCM graded piano exams in Southampton, Portsmouth, Basingstoke, and Winchester, with regular sittings throughout the year. Our local tutors are familiar with the major syllabi and can guide students through the technical, performance, sight-reading, and aural requirements at each level.

About Our Hampshire Piano Tutors

Hampshire’s piano tutors work across the full breadth of the county, from the South Coast cities of Southampton and Portsmouth through to inland towns and the New Forest. Each tutor sets their own pricing, lesson schedule, and lesson location — typically the tutor’s home, the student’s home, or a local music school.

When you submit an enquiry, we connect you with a piano teacher in the area you’ve chosen. There’s no charge to use the directory; you arrange lessons directly with your tutor.
